Strategisches PM | Strategic Product Management Multipeel® Avoiding food waste with reclose systems Every year in Germany alone, 11 million tons of food are thrown away. 59% or 6.5 tons come from households, 17% from commercial eating establishments and 7% from retail. In statistical terms, that means per person that about 170 pounds or 78 kilograms of food end up in the trash for various reasons. And that is why more than 190 countries worldwide agreed in the “UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” to halve their per-capita food was- te at the retailer and consumer level by 2030. They also aim to significantly reduce losses along the process chain. In face of these alarming statistics, a new approach is urgently needed, especially because about ten million of the roughly 1.3 billion tons of food waste worldwide could be avoided. This waste is responsible for almost 22 million tons of greenhouse gases. Even small changes have an effect Even though the ecological footprint of a package is about 30 times smaller than the footprint of a packaged food product when a holistic view is taken of the cultivation, production, processing and logistics of the food, even the smal- lest changes, including those to packaging design, can lead to improvement. Packaging systems with a reclose function are a good approach. They have a major impact on the shelf life and freshness of the packaged product and make it simple for consumers to easily open and securely reseal the package thanks to their integrated functionalities. Here at SÜDPACK, we have been a hallmark for experience and quality in reclosable films for nearly 20 years – and were also one of the first suppliers on the market to focus on developing sustainable concepts in this product segment. Our expertise and unique range of products with various polymer structures offer customers around the world a high level of safety and maximum flexibility for application scenarios. Multipeel® – a strong product family Even though the launch of our groundbreaking product family exactly 20 years ago was a major accomplishment, we have never rested on our laurels. A lot has happened since, and there is still a lot more to come. We are constantly developing our portfolio. Our reclosable films now impress not only with their performance, but also with their sustainability. For example, they can also adhere to recyclable PP, PE and PET bases. Our Pure-Line overall concept on a polypropylene basis, for example, consists of an Ecoterm bottom web and our reclosing Multipeel® PurePP top web. It has even been certified by the indepen- dent cyclos-HTP institute with a recyclability of up to 95%. For an extended product shelf life, the high-performance films can be equip- ped with different barrier functions depending on requirements. Compared to packaging concepts without a reclose system, products such as sliced cheese in a Multipeel pack lose much less moisture and weight after opening. This means they stay fresh and appetizing down to the very last slice, and nothing is prematurely thrown away. An additional advantage is that Multipeel con- cepts with a comparable thickness have an almost identical carbon footprint to packages without a reclose system. As a result, Multipeel contributes to a more positive eco-balance for the packaged product. Whatever the type, thickness, functionalities and application areas of the films, all products in the Multipeel family can easily be processed on common, stan- dard machines. Thanks to the established, practice-proven SÜDPACK system, they offer high process reliability and product safety. Is Multipeel® already the ultima ratio in its current form? The answer is no. As a market leader in the field of reclose systems, we are actively shaping the future of the product and are working hard on its further development. Our offer is systematically aligned to meet future requirements, which will be largely shaped by sustainability. We are certain that the future lies in monostructures based on PP, PET and PE – and the winners are PET and PP sealing layers. Modern Package Printing - moving ahead with SPQ With our SPQ printing technology, we set new standards in 2021. Since then, our customers have been switching their package print- ing to this particularly efficient, and therefore sustainable, process. As a pioneer in the market, we not only believe in this technology, but are also continuously developing it. And we make investments in order to meet growing demand. In the new Allstein Sprint 66-105 at our site in Ochsenhausen, for example – an eight-color central cylin- der press with a following inline printing unit with excellent register accuracy for coating applications that is specifically designed for SPQ and can print up to a width of 1,050 mm. With 100 percent web mo- nitoring including a coating station, the machine offers a high level of production reliability in order to achieve the highest speeds as well as a maximum level of quality.
